Kwando Private Concession Safaris
Kwando's Private Concession is located towards the northern border of Botswana and borders Namibia and the Kwando River. A huge concession (2,320km squared) consisting of open floodplains, mopane woodland and riverine forests, Kwando is accessed pri
marily by light aircraft into either the Lebala or Lagoon airstrips. Alternatively if combined with Selinda road transfers are available.
The best time to visit the Kwando Concession is similar to other regions that are affected by the accessibility of water sources and therefore game viewing improves as the terrain becomes drier and game congregates around the permanent water that is available. Therefore from the month of June onwards the herds (buffalo and elephants) gather and predators follow.
As a private wildlife concession it does mean that you will pay more for your safari. The advantages of this however are that you are able to drive off-road and do not have to stick to the tracks; you are also permitted to do night safaris. Both of the above mean that your wildlife experience is greatly enhanced as you have access to game viewing throughout the concession rather than just what you see alongside the road (as is the case in Moremi Reserve and Chobe National Park). The other huge advantage is that as a private concession you will only ever see the vehicles from the few lodges that are in the concession, meaning that on any wildlife sightings there is no crowding and you often end up with some fantastic wildlife viewing to yourself.
Wildlife of Kwando:
Similar wildlife viewing to that of the Selinda Concession although Kwando (as well as Selinda) is renowned for its frequent wild dog sightings with packs denning during the months of June and July. Spotting wild dogs is a highlight of any safari and the Kwando guides excel in their tracking techniques with both a driver/guide and tracker accompanying each vehicle. Using specially adpated vehicles to track cross country your guides will
make every effort to track and follow a variety of wildlife that frequents the concession. This may not be suitable to all clients however this is a true wildlife experience which gets the adrenalin pumping and maximises your wildlife viewing opportunities. Wild dog sightings are good throughout the concession however more so in and around the Lebala Camp region.
Kwando has good resident populations of lion, leopard, spotted hyena, wild dogs and also some good cheetah sightings with 3 brothers and a solitary female that are seen fairly regularly.
The two main camps to stay in in the Kwando Concession are Lebala Camp and Lagoon Camp. Lebala is the slightly more upmarket and expensive camp located alongside a permanent lagoon. During the wet season mosquitoes can be an issue at Lebala however this is more than made up for by the wildlife sightings. Lagoon Camp is in the mid-range bracket and is located on the Kwando River; sightings here recently in December included three cheetah brothers, one single female cheetah, sable, excellent elephant sightings and much more.
